 Mercat De l'Olivar
There are many covered markets in Palma, but the Mercat de l'Olivar in the capital city is the largest and most renowned. It was first designed in 1914 by the architect Gaspar Bennazar-remember him from the vintage weather station we saw earlier? The market building finally took shape in 1951 to house the fishmonger, butcher and greengrocer guilds in the city. The building has an L-shaped floor plan, with two levels and an underground space that is used predominantly for cold storage and ice production. The market was remodeled and modernized in 2003 and now provides a welcoming space for 100 stalls selling the finest local produce for locals and visitors alike.
