The Black House
Plaza Mayor
The main square in today’s Palma de Mallorca was, centuries ago, the headquarters of the Spanish Inquisition. The terror among citizens caused by the court and the inhumane acts that took place in the building earned it the name of La Casa Negra (The Black House). The term Inquisition refers to the Catholic and Protestant Churches dedicated to punishing so-called heretics and people outside of their respective religions. A document signed by the Commissioners of the Parliament of England decreed that every "Roman priest" should be hanged, beheaded, quartered, have his entrails taken out and burned and have his head placed on a pole in a public place. Under the main square today, you’ll find a shopping arcade that replaced the torture rooms of La Casa Negra in the Middle Ages.
