Οn Gaudí’s Tail
Edifici Casasayas
Continuing your way through the old town, you’ll come across two striking examples of art nouveau architecture, located side by side and separated by the Calle de Santacilia route. You aren’t seeing double—the Casasayas and the Pensión Menorquina are symmetric buildings. The exact date of their construction is not certain but is estimated to be between 1908 and 1911. The project was initially assigned to the architect Francesc Roca, who was responsible for the design conception, with the construction process completed by Guillem Reynés. This historic gem was commissioned by Josep Casasayas Casajuana, owner of the historic pastry shop, “Can Frasquet”, dating back to the 17th century. Τhe indistinguishable buildings are made of wood and metal, with intense linearity and symmetry. The decorative patterns evoke the motion of a twisted branch, alongside patterns inspired by the natural world. The work reflects the modernist architecture style made famous by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí.
