The Reformation was a religious movement that began in 16th century Germany, when Martin Luther published his 95 theses to condemn the sale of indulgences and the pope’s absolute authority. The movement spread and laid the foundation of Protestantism. Soon, as the reformers condemned the ostentation of church art, the Catholic Church emphasised the expressive power of art. Images were no longer employed just to teach those who could not read but also to attract converts to the Church with its splendor and brilliance.
