Nikolaos Gyzis was one of the most important Greek painters of the 19th century, representative of the so-called “Munich School”. He studied in the National Technical University (1854-1864) under the guidance of Filippos Margaritis and Agathangelos Triantafyllou. In 1865, he went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich where he studied under the guidance of Hermann Anschutz and Alexander von Wagner. He was awarded a distinction at the Paris Universal Exhibition (1878), the International Exhibition of Munich and in Madrid (1892). In 1888, he became a Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 1887, he designed the flag of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and in 1896, he designed the Diploma of the Olympic Games.
