Ermou Street is Gythio’s main commercial avenue. Its construction was part of the city’s urban plan, created in 1861 and based on the Hippodamian system. Originally this spot was the ravine of a dry river. Numerous small bridges connected the newest settlement with the remains of the ancient town that was known as Paliopoli.
