Aristotle’s Peripatos
Eastern bathhouse
The Lyceum was one of the three main gymnasia of ancient Athens. The site was discovered in 1996 during excavation for the construction of the Museum of Modern Art. The archaeological remains belong to the athletic facilities of the original Lyceum since the foundations lie on the bedrock. Aristotle founded his school in 335/6 BCE. The school members called it Peripatos, a word meaning “given to walking about”.
