Ionian Parliament
The Ionian Parliament is a neoclassical building designed by the famous Corfiot architect Ioannis Chronis in 1855 to replace an earlier Venetian building destroyed by fire. It is a beautiful example of the island’s architecture in the early 19th century. It is also historically significant as the location where the Greek deputies of the Ionian Parliament declared union with Greece in the early 1860s. Unfortunately, the building was destroyed by the Germans in 1943, but it was restored twenty years later to its current form.
