The travelers
Athens of 1674
The travelers are affluent Europeans of the 17th-19th century who travelled to explore the east, especially Greece and its antiquities for the research of the past and the folklore. They can be considered as the first tourists, who sometimes travelled for 1-2 months. The travellers often brought a painter with them and kept a diary, in order to imprint their experience and the moments from their journeys with all the available means of that time. They usually came, authorized by princes and heirs, to visit the Holy Land in order to imprint the monuments, meet the Greek civilization and obtain antiquities for themselves or for others.
