The terms “carnival” and “apokria”

The term “carnival” possibly derives from the latin phrase “Carne levare”, which means “to remove meat”. The Greek term “apokria” etymologically derives from the preposition “apo” (which means “from”) and the noun “kreas” (which means “meat”). It means “abstinence from meat” because, according to the custom, after the carnival begins the period of fasting until Easter.
