Key to the City's Defenses
Casa de los Picos
This 15th century building takes its name from the unusual peaks in front - 600 granite stones each shaped like the point of a diamond. The design of the façade was so original and spectacular that the city’s inhabitants took to calling it the Peaks house. These peaks also served a function, as the tower of the house was part of the city's defenses. The palace was previously attached to the San Martin door, one of the city's entrances, which was demolished in 1883. Despite the fact that the house was constructed during the Gothic period, its appearance is more reminiscent of the Renaissance style. The De la Hoz family coat of arms, which is a sickle is featured atop each of the building's lintels. Notice that hoz is the Spanish word for sickle.
