A Gothic Industrial Building
The Alhóndiga
The building façade is adorned with two city shields which show the city's leading symbol, the aqueduct, and a human head, representing Segovia as the head of the Castilian Extremadura, or territories conquered from the Moors. It's one of the few remaining examples of industrial architecture from the time of the Catholic monarchs. Its purpose was to assist neighbors, particularly farmers, in a time of scarcity. Three parallel galleries and a steep access ramp comprise the building's original structure, which has been well preserved. Previously, its interior housed three storage areas named Glory, Purgatory, and Hell. Today however, the Historical Segovia Archives are housed in the building, which is likewise used for cultural events.
