Romanesque Splendour
San Martin Church
The church's three naves were constructed atop a Mozarab temple. A Mudejar tower with a Baroque spire catches the eye. Four hieratical prophets or apostles with an interesting fold in their clothing flank the main entrance. The church's most prominent feature is the group of sculpted capitals and corbels, which are lavishly ornamented. The eroding and partial replacement of the original pink limestone may complicate the identification of the patterns. However, the most impressive gallery is inside the southern one, whose thirteen arches feature bestiary motifs. In the north gallery, Nativity and Passion depictions are displayed. The interior was updated in the seventeenth century. Notable of these updates are the Gothic-Flemish Herrera chapel and a 17th-century Death Christ. Saint Martin of Tours presides over the primary altar. Impressed? Go inside and take a closer look. It opens 30 minutes before mass, where you can pop in for free!
