A Plaza Mayor, in Other Words
Plaza Mayor or Main Square
A common feature of the urban landscape in Spain since the 16th century, the Plaza Mayor is one of the country’s most distinctive urban contributions. Usually featuring regular, identical porticoes and based in the center of cities and towns, the Plaza Mayor often sits in the shadow of city hall. These squares are prominent in city life as a whole; through the centuries they’ve served as parade grounds, markets, public announcement stages, and simply social gathering spots.
