The Gothic Temple
San Miguel Church
The new late-gothic church was constructed close to its predecessor. On the façade, which depicts St. Michael taking control of the dragon, St. Peter, and St. Paul, you can see that the architect Rodrigo Gil de Ontañon repurposed stones and decorative elements from the former Romanesque church. However, the ones on the façade are copies, as the originals were placed in the atrium for better preservation. In addition, the atrium houses an effigy of Isabella I of Castile. The main reredos is a baroque piece by José de Ferreras, completed in 1672. Andrés Laguna, a well-known physician and philologist, is buried in this church. His tomb, located to the right of the church entrance, is a fresco, decorated with white figures on a black background.
