Who is Antonio Machado?
Antonio Machado's House
Antonio Machado was one of the most prominent poets and writers of Spain's lauded Generation of '98. Born in Seville in 1875, he passed away in France in 1939. During his tenure in the city, he frequented cultural circles and co-founded the Popular Segovian University with other men of letters. There, he provided French and literature classes to the working class at night. After the untimely loss of his first wife, he fell in love with a married woman, to whom he dedicated his poems under the fantastical name of Guiomar. During his time in Segovia, he was elected to the Royal Spanish Academy. In 1932, after thirteen years in the city, he relocated to Madrid and died in France after escaping the Spanish Civil War.
