The Collapse of Communism in Europe
The Memorial of Rebirth
1989 was a monumental year in the history of Eastern Europe. On the 9th of November the Berlin Wall fell and soon after, Communist regimes fell like dominoes East Germany, Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Change arrived swiftly in these countries in a mostly peaceful manner. Romania however, though beginning to teeter, was yet to topple. Millions of Romanians were illegally listening in on foreign radio broadcasts from the nations west of the border as they broke free of Communism, and they wished the same would happen soon happen on the home front. On the contrary, Ceausescu reaffirmed his refusal of reforms in the political system and consolidated his position when he was re-elected in November 1989.
