An Important Historical Landmark
Mihai Voda Church
This is the Mihai Voda Church, one of the many Christian Orthodox churches in Bucharest. Although it may look like most other old churches from Romania, this one has a fascinating tale. It was built in 1595 and its founder was one of the greatest leaders from the Romanian past - the prince Michael the Brave, who in 1600 managed to create a unified Romania for the first time in history. This building was part of a large monastery, which provided many houses for the monks as well as a library where eventually the state's archives were kept in the 20th century. However, all that remains today from the former monastery is the church building and the bell tower in the back, as all other buildings were demolished in the 1980s by the Communist regime. In fact, the church itself was originally located in a different place, some 300 meters away near today's Palace of the Parliament. The reason for the move is another interesting one which we’ll get to in just a moment.
