The fountain
Rimondi Fountain
Originally built in 1588, the fountain was reconstructed in 1626 by the city’s Rector Alvise Rimondi at his own expense. The water flows out of three spouts in the form of lions' heads placed between four columns with Corinthian capitals. The Turks placed two pillars in front of the fountain facade and connected them with three pointed arches. Above them rose a dome which covered the area in front of the fountain like a loggia. These Ottoman additions were mostly destroyed in the Second World War. Today only the right pillar with the arch and part of the dome survives.
