In the church of the former Franciscan monastery, built in 1453, one of the three Venetian churches of Rethymno, the Turks built a public soup kitchen (imaret) in 1796 and connected it to the neighboring Nerantza Mosque. At the end of the 19th century, a half-moon was added above the window barriers in the doorway. This is, however, the only remaining reference to its Muslim past. The school, which was also part of the Nerantza Mosque, was built on the site of the Franciscan monastery. Today the primary school is housed in a building from 1890.
