Kara Musa Pasha Mosque
Shopping street Arkadiou
The Venetian monastery of Saint Barbara, at the southeast end of Arkadiou Street, was converted into a mosque in 1646. The roof was replaced by a dome and a minaret was added. The mosque was named after Admiral Kara Mustafa Pasha, the commander of the Ottoman fleet during the conquest of Rethymno. The complex, which was renovated in 2006, now houses the Byzantine Antiquities Department, but it is not accessible.
