The Prophet and the cats
Cats’ best friends
Many stories attest to the Prophet Muhammad’s love for cats. He cut the sleeve of his garment off rather than disturb his sleeping cat (who was called Muezza) when he heard the call to prayer. He instructed his followers to love and care for all animals as creations of God, narrating how a woman was doomed to eternal damnation for keeping a cat locked till it died of hunger. His companion Abū Hurayrah was known as the “Father of the Kitten” due to his love for a little cat he always carried with him. It is even said that cats came to have stripes on their heads when Muhammad touched the head of a cat who saved him from a venomous snake.
