Raising the stakes
Prison time
As time went by, the relationship between Casanova, Marina, and the ambassador became more bizarre. Caterina, the 14-year-old Giacomo had seduced a few years ago, was living in the same monastery and was now pulled into the erotic circle. Casanova enjoyed her with Marina and then “offered” her to the French ambassador as a sign of gratitude for his generosity. All these goings on aroused the suspicions of the authorities. Why was Casanova always visiting the convent? And what business did he have talking to the French ambassador when all contact between citizens of Venice and foreigners was prohibited? Soon Casanova was under surveillance and the authorities knew he was a freethinker who cheated at cards and corrupted innocent victims.
