Ziller’s masterpiece
The National Theatre
The Greek National Theatre was built in the period 1895-1901. It was designed by the German architect Ernst Ziller. The building was used to house the official royal theatre attended only by invitation until 1908 when it was opened to the public. In 1924, it was renamed from “Royal Theatre” to “National Theatre”. The design of the monument’s facade was based on Hadrian's Library, located in Athens. The facade consists of a central section rich in ornamental elements with a colonnade designed in the Corinthian order and two lateral sections with a typical neoclassical architecture. The influence of Renaissance buildings is clear.
