The Gestapo
Østre Strandgate 5
The Gestapo, the German secret police that carried out intelligence work, did all it could to crush all opposition that stood in the way of Nazi Germany’s plans for Norway. Here you can see the Gestapo’s first headquarters in Kristiansand. Anyone who in any way worked for the resistance movement against the Nazis, or was suspected of doing so, was in danger of being interrogated by the Gestapo. In 1942, the Gestapo moved into the premises of the Norwegian State Archives at Bellevue. Several Norwegians collaborated with the Gestapo, working, for example, as interpreters or whistleblowers.
