King Haakon VII’s 70th birthday
Kronprinsensgate 13
Norwegians all over the country were looking forward to celebrating the 70th birthday of King Haakon VII on 3 August 1942. Still, the occupying forces made it illegal to hoist the Norwegian flag and celebrate the Norwegian king! How can such a big day be celebrated in secret? Two days before the King’s birthday, the illegal newspaper Fritt Norge (A Free Norway) wrote, “All Good Norwegians will honor the king on his birthday by wearing a fresh flower in their buttonhole.” That day, numerous fines were given, and arrests were made because of the ‘royal flower campaign.’ Nevertheless, many Norwegians wore their finest clothing and a flower for their king’s birthday. On top of this, in cities with a street named ‘Kings Street,’ many chose to walk down the road to mark that it was the king they celebrated clearly.
