Kristiansand District Prison
Rådhusgata 26
Kristiansand District Prison was completed in 1864 and was built as part of the Kristiansand town hall. Though the original building has been demolished, details of its former wall remain. Due to the need for expansion and more space, the building was first moved and used until 1977, while It was later demolished. The Germans used the district prison for prisoners of war. Most prisoners came through the dungeon before being released or sent for questioning at the dreaded Gestapo headquarters at the Arkivet. It has been challenging to determine where specific prisoners were interred due to the destruction of prison documents by the security police (Sipo) before the war’s capitulation.
