Moritz Rabinowitz
RÃ¥dhusgata 6
Moritz Rabinowitz came to Norway in 1901 and established several stores along the southern coast between Haugesund and Kristiansand. He wrote many articles in local and national newspapers expressing his concern for the growing German anti-Jewish sentiment after the Nazis came to power. At the same time, Rabinowitz was also concerned about growing antisemitism in Norwegian society. He was a known anti-Nazi and was among the first in Norway to be wanted by the German security police after the occupation. In the meantime, with Benjamin Bild, Rabinowitz was also the first to be deported from Norway in May 1941 and sent to Sachsenhausen, where he was forced to carry bricks for up to 12 hours daily. He lacked food and was mistreated. It was on the 27th of February, 1942, when he finally died.
