Jews in Captivity
Rådhusgata 6
The attempt by Germans to exterminate Jews is a part of Kristiansand’s history since Jews in Agder were also persecuted. Some southern Norwegians helped Jews to escape, while others collaborated with the Nazis to have Jews arrested. Many were spectators to what was happening, having understood or should have understood what was happening but did nothing (Hagen, 2016) . Around 800 Jews were arrested nationwide during October and November 1942. Most of these Jews were deported in 1942 and 1943. The largest deportation of Jews from Norway occurred on 26 November 1942, when 532 Jews boarded the MS Donau in Oslo Harbor. Edith, her husband Hans Reichwald, and their two-year-old son Harry were all killed in Auschwitz. (Source of image : Karmsund folkemuseum)
