The Teachers’ Campaign
Skippergata 24
Nazism, or National Socialism, is an aggressive, race-based nationalism, often extremely antisemitic, distrusting democracy (snl.no). All teachers were forced to instruct their students about Nazism, both in school and during free time, as an attempt to gain the hearts and minds of the Norwegian youth. Teachers who did not follow the order were in grave danger of arrest. The Nazification of the school system was met with excellent resistance by most of the teachers, and more than 1000 teachers across Norway were arrested. Many of them were sent into forced labor in Kirkenes in Norway’s far north. At the same time, the head of the National Assembly, Vidkun Quisling, attempted to block the payment of salaries to teachers who refused to follow orders. What might have been the outcome if teachers followed the order to teach Nazi ideology in the classroom? (Source of image: Riksarkivet og www.fanger.no)
