Sinagoge Mare
Sinagoge Mare
By this time you should be arriving at the Great Synagogue, or Sinagoge Mare.We have to leave it to you to gain entrance. It was built in 1845 by the Polish Jewish community in Bucharest, and the synagogue was renovated several times over the coming decades. The exterior you see here, and the interior, was mostly designed in 1936 by Gershon Horowitz. But six years later, during the infamous Bucharest pogrom, the synagogue was ransacked. It took years for it to be restored. When you step inside, the color you’ll notice—gold, And more gold. With some yellow and blue. As you will see all over Romania, while many older buildings are in poor condition, once the funding is found to restore them, Romanians do a brilliant job. Which is what we have here.Just like the Choral Temple, a barrel vaulted ceiling stretches the length of the sanctuary, and it seems superfluous to call your attention to the chandelier above because no one’s going to miss that magnificent structure—its like a golden space ship. In front of you on the bema, or altar, you’ll see an exquisitely carved archway, crowned by a likeness of the ten commandments with two winged lions on either side.Truly, this sanctuary is a work of art, so have a seat and soak it all in for a few minutes.
