At Home with Sophie Engler
At Home with Sophie Engler
A few blocks away from where we are now—that’s where the Winternitz and Engler family lived.Tanja Eckstein interviewed Sophie Engler in 2003 and here’s a short description of how she described her home."This enormous house was the very first one in our street. It was built by the Winternitz family in 1875. When Paul Winternitz died in 1918, his widow Irene ruled over the house for years. In 1923, Irene’s younger daughter Clara married a dashing young attorney, Dr. Richard Engler. And six years later, Clara and Richard had their only child, that would be me…Sophie. As a religion, our family was Jewish but not very observant. In fact, when I was a child, no one asked in school or on the playground who was Jewish or not. No one cared."
