With the Family of Lucia Treister/Heilman
Living in the same neighborhood was Lucia Treister, who later became Lucia Heilman. Here’s what she said."Several Jewish families lived in our apartment house and as for my own family, things were complicated. My mother was a brilliant woman, studied medicine and worked as a doctor. I never really knew my father as my parents separated early. My grandfather looked after me. He spoke Yiddish, and I still remember it.He and I loved to go for walks along the Danube Canal, he read books to me, and told very good stories. Each time he would begin: “Should I tell you about heaven or hell?” I always wanted him to talk about hell.Little did I know then what was ahead of me.In 1935 I started school. Lots of Jewish children in my class. The religion classes were divided, but otherwise that wasn’t an issue. Kids generally get along. Then Hitler came in 1938. When Chancellor Schuschnigg gave his speech on the evening of 11 March 1938 we already had a radio at home and my mother listened to him speak. She became distraught. She was devastated and didn’t know what to do. She wasn’t the only one."
