Built on a plateau and close to the sea, Areopoli has been vulnerable to attacks. Therefore, its residents try to protect their properties. Despite the fact that life in the settlement is not entirely in line with that of most of Mani fortresses, Areopoli has many tower-houses with martial infrastructure that belonged to the area’s powerful families, while the humble houses of the poorest were surrounded by tall walls.
