First in the Revolution
Square of 17th March 1821
The local historical narrative wants Mani to be the first region to revolt against the Ottomans in 1821 .This is seen as proof of the patriotism and militant spirit of its inhabitants. The truth is that the local troops moved a few days earlier than the general outbreak of the Peloponnese but for more practical reasons: firstly because they were serving a strategic military plan, and secondly because Mani was an autonomous region which means that it wasn’t under strict Turkish surveillance.
