A lesson in gloating
Arc de Triomphe
The triumphal arch of Orange was built in the first century when mighty Augustus ruled in faraway Rome. It is the third-largest surviving Roman triumphal arch, the oldest triple-arched, and (probably) the best-preserved. The arch commemorates Roman military success against the Gauls and the Germans. It stood on the famous Via Agrippa, a massive road network built by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa on the orders of Augustus to bring a touch of Roman civilization to the Gauls.
