The "Alla Corona" Brewery
Brasserie de la Couronne
Run for years by the Rinckenberger family, the "Alla Corona" brewery produced a beer renowned throughout the region. For a time, painter Paul Weiss kept the rue de la Couronne venue. Sometimes, between noon and one o'clock, on the way home from middle school, my father, a fine gourmet, would send me to get him a shot of Madeira from his friend Paul Weiss, who ran the brewery "Alla Corona." It was used to flavor the beef dish simmering in the cast-iron pot on the old gas stove at the back of our kitchen. Keeping the well-filled crystal glass in front of my eyes to avoid spilling it, I would find a way to lick a few drops of the precious sweet amber liquor, continuing to avoid stumbling on the uneven pavement of the Pharmacists' Street - also known as the Street of Pigs - that led me back home by taking a big detour.
