Transit Museum and Goodbye
Transit Museum and Goodbye
RHIANNON: Grand Central Terminal has seen its share of ups and downs over its long lifetime. DANNY: During Covid, it was so quiet here and it was almost sad because it was an eerie silence, almost like, flatline. And to see a place that you hold dear, so quiet and it's like, it lost its heart, you know? And then when things started opening back up and you start hearing the music, or there’s this guy, he dances around with a skeleton, he's gotta tape the feet taped to his shoes. Just to see that, you know… RHIANNON: It’s a place that seems to always hold the drama and possibility of life in New York. DANNY: It's one of those rare pieces in New York that it feels like as a New Yorker, it's our special space. Right? Times Square is a very big tourist attraction. The Statue of Liberty, even Empire State Building. I feel like those pieces of New York belong to the world, but Grand Central is still a very New Yorker thing. Like, Oh, we'll go there. You know, you guys could have everything else. RHIANNON: It’s truly beloved. MICHAEL: When I first got married, I would kid around with my wife and say, “I'm off to work. I'm gonna go see my agumara.” And she would say, “your agumara!” I'd say, “Yes. My, my next love – Grand Central.” So that's always been a running joke with us. “I'm gonna go see my agumara, Grand Central.” Besides being the best opportunity I ever had in my life, it's been the greatest experience I had in my life. You see all of humanity, you see the rich, the poor. You see the whole drama of life every day, walking right in front of you. It's really New York. It's really the drama of New York. It's better than any Broadway play. All rolled up into one. History, culture, drama. It really is a great place that makes you feel more than what you are. When you step on that upper level and you look about you, you really feel so great to be in such an open area. It's a wonder. It really makes you feel grand. They named it correctly. Grand Central. RHIANNON: On your way out, check out The New York Transit Museum Gallery Annex & Store in Grand Central to learn even more – they offer rotating exhibitions and educational programming to collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret the history of public transportation in the New York metropolitan region.
