A house for the bishop
Art Museum of Girona
This space has been the property of the Church since the 10th century, when count Borrell sold it to bishop Gotmar III. However, construction of the bishopric’s palace did not begin until the 12th century, under the guidance of Bishop Guillem de Peratallada. At first it looked more like a fortress, which is understandable, given how close it is to the city’s walls. But in the 16th-17th century, it underwent several reformations which transformed it into something much more akin to a palace. During the Napoleonic Wars, it was partially destroyed – leading to another modification that enlarged and extended the building to its current dimensions.
