Rise and fall
Sant Pere de Galligants
We do not have the foundation charter, but we know that it existed in the 10th century – thanks to donation records. In the 12th century, the monastery reached its peak, with the construction of a new church, largely due to a donation from Ramón Berenguer III. But from the 15th century, its relevance decreased and it was slowly annexed to other minor monasteries. The 19th century was especially harsh for the monastery, with the Independence War and the Mendizábal confiscation. Later on, it hosted a barrack of the Spanish military police (guardia civil) until 1857, when it became the Archaeological Museum of Girona. They do say that all good things come to an end.
