A martyrium is a construction that commemorates certain moments in Jesus’ life – or the dying place of a martyr. This one was placed here to commemorate the death of Saint Felix, along with other Christians, in 305 – under Diocletian’s persecutions. It also provides us with the earliest evidence of Christianity in Girona. It remained the main Christian centre until the 10th century, when the cathedral began its construction. Because it was outside the city walls, it was a bit less protected, which explains its fortified aspect. If you look at the bell tower you’ll spot that the bottom is a bit angled – can you see? That was done deliberately – a clever tweak to the design to make it harder to climb. Genius!
