Roland at the city hall
Roland am Rathaus
The Roland is a typical Nordic phenomenon. The Halberstadt Roland is together with the Rolanden of Bremen and Quedlinburg one of the oldest in its kind.Schwab writes: As protector of the privileges of the market and probably also of the court freedom he stands in plump insubordination and defiant strength: the right hand holds the sword, on his left leans a shield, carrying the double-headed eagle, and the figure with the powerful head framed by curls has a height of 4.39 meters. The facial features - despite their awkward shapes - are not entirely devoid of expression, and indeed it is a fusion of good nature and light mockery that fills them. It has been standing at the town hall of Halberstadt for quite a long time and one would like to believe that it is the realization of transience that has opened up to the mute knight in the course of centuries and has shaped his features in its understanding affirmation. And while I try to read in them, the stony lips seem to open and begin to tell of richly moved time that has long since faded away. And not only self-experienced and seen, but also heard they do me kund.
