Royal Palace of Turin
The Royal Palace, initially the residence of the bishop, was put on the map in the 16th century when it became Emanuele Philibert I duke of Savoy’s residence. It was extensively modernised in the 18th century with designs by Filippo Juvarra (1678-1736). The building combines Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical elements. It was a symbol of power for the Dukes of Savoy, especially after they became kings of Sardinia. The residence remained the seat of the monarchy until 1865 when the royal family moved to Florence, the kingdom’s new capital.
