The Devil’s head
Portone del Diavolo (Gates of Hell)
The Banca Nazionale del Lavoro headquarters would be just another pretty building in downtown Turin if not for its mysterious door. In the 17th century, Giovanni Battista Trucchi di Levaldigi, finance minister during the reign of Charles Emmanuel II (he of the pointy nose and spectacular wig), lived in this building. He wished to have a magnificent door, which he ordered in Paris. The door was elaborately carved with innocent flowers, animals, and cupids. However, the door knocker consists of two snakes and the Devil’s head. The official story of the door’s manufacture in Paris is often disregarded for a more sinister alternative. According to this theory, the door appeared overnight at the behest of a sorcerer's apprentice. However, the Devil grew tired of being summoned in the middle of the night and imprisoned the apprentice behind the door. FOREVER.
