The extension
Portico of the Roman Forum
The portico belonged to the forum of Augusta Emerita. The forum was among the colony’s earliest areas to be developed and stood near the intersection of the city’s main thoroughfares. The portico was built a few decades later to extend the original forum, which was closer to the so-called Temple of Diana. The addition used the Forum of Augustus in Rome as a model and was richly adorned with sculptures.
