The Miracle
Acueducto de los Milagros
The Acueducto de los Milagros (Aqueduct of the Miracles) is a technical miracle of Roman engineering. The structure comprises 38 arched pillars standing 25 meters (82 feet) tall. It is all that remains from an aqueduct built in the first century to provide Augusta Emerita with water from the Proserpina Dam, five kilometers (three miles) north of Mérida. The name is attributed to the residents of Mérida, who marveled at the aqueduct’s unceasing efficiency well after the fall of the Roman Empire.
