The Home of the Ionian Parliament
Ionian Parliament
We are still in the Porta Remounta district, in front of yet another city monument. The stately neoclassical building in front of you was designed during the British Protectorate by local architect Ioannis Chronis, who studied in Corfu, Venice and the famous Academy of San Luca in Rome. As one of the first architects of the modern Greek state, Chronis is responsible for many of Corfu’s public buildings and residences. From 1855, this one housed sessions of the Ionian Parliament, which had been founded in 1817 following the declaration of the Ionian Islands as an autonomous state at the start of the century.
