The first university in modern Greece
Ionian Academy
On to another landmark Corfu building next. The Ionian Academy was founded in 1824 and was the first university-level academic institution in modern Greece. It was created after a donation by Frederick North, an Englishman with a strong admiration for Greek culture and better known as Lord Guildford. North was the Commissioner for Education of the Ionian State at a time when Thomas Maitland was High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands, although Maitland himself had no interest in local education. As the first university in modern Greece, the Ionian Academy initially consisted of four faculties: law, Theology, Medicine and Philosophy (within which additional courses in natural sciences and mathematics were taught). Later, the Polytechnic and Midwifery and Pharmacy schools were added.
