Prominent scholars taught at the Ionian Academy’s faculties of Theology and Philosophy, such as the esteemed Greek poet from Zakynthos, Andreas Kalvos. It was also here that Modern Greek academic language was developed within the context of what is known by academics as “The Greek Language Question” – an often fractious debate over the use of demotic Greek (as spoken by everyday Greeks) or the cultivated imitation of Ancient Greek known as katharevousa. And so, it was here that the first Modern Greek university texts were published.
