The Old Fortress today
Old Fortress
At the central gate of the Old Fortress, you find a statue of the German Marshal Schulenburg, who was honoured by the Venetians for his part in the repulsion of the Turks in 1716. Today, the Old Fortress commemorates many aspects of Corfu’s history and culture, housing the Central Library of Corfu (formerly the English Barracks), the Byzantine Collection of Corfu and the Department of Music Studies of the Ionian University (also former English barracks). Its open spaces in front of the Church of Saint George are used for cultural events. There is also a café, a marina in Mandraki and a restaurant. If you climb to the top of the Land Tower, you will have a magnificent view of the Old Town and Garitsa Bay. On a good day, you can see the mountains of Epirus.
